Blog #13 The Most Memorable Moments…

CLASS SUMMARY:  For January, the focus was on learning to minister in the role of Deacon at Baptisms, Weddings, and Funerals.  In the Christian life, these are some of the most memorable moments in our lives.  To help us perform these correctly, we had a classroom portion on the established Catholic Rite for Baptism, Weddings and Funerals.  After that, we did our best with some hands-on practice.  In the picture below, it’s my turn to practice Baptism on our baby infant doll.

FUNERALS:  We learned about the role of Deacon in Funeral services with a special emphasis on the importance of compassion and accompaniment of family members during this time of sorrow.  The recent funeral of Pope Benedict XVI was televised globally and served as a reminder to the world that all of us have limited time here on Earth.  I included a short prayer from Pope Benedict XVI below that I often reflect on when attending funerals.

The belief that love can reach into the afterlife, that reciprocal giving and receiving is possible, in which our affection for one another continues beyond the limits of death. This has been a fundamental conviction of Christianity throughout the ages and it remains a great source of hope and comfort today. — Pope Benedict XVI

WHATS NEXTIn March, we will travel to Saint Meinrad, Indiana to finish our course on the Holy Trinity.  On 30 March, two fellow Deacon classmates and I will be live on Catholic Radio 92.7 discussing Deacon Formation.  Also, I started Spiritual Direction training that I am really excited to share more about in future Blog Posts!  The completion date for Deacon formation is June 3, 2023.  For a complete list of classes and progress toward completion click Here
